South Walton seeks landfill solution amid porous soil
Digs in the south county are ruled out due to soil porosity raising drinking water contamination fears. Walton Bridge and New Harmony dumps are closing as transfers plan, while Blue Mountain and Freeport remain unresolved. Dixon Disposal seeks a south end transfer station or a new waste center, but state DER approval and site feasibility lag. Blackshear stresses county must own a plan independent of the Dixons.

Water Woes Could Grow
The Northwest Florida Water Management District told its board that water availability looks better for Destin and worse for South Walton than earlier projections. Test wells showed Destin yielding higher than expected, while South Walton wells revealed saltwater intrusion and soft rock, suggesting potential future shortages if growth accelerates, though population projections have been adjusted to reflect lower occupancy in South Walton.
