Panhandle Teachers Out Of Field Says UF Official
Dr. David Smith of the University of Florida warns that nearly 9 percent of math and science teachers in the Panhandle and north central Florida teach out of field. State data show 1,505 of 27,558 middle and high school math and science teachers lack proper qualifications, with shortages also striking foreign languages special education and vocational areas. The report notes about 6,000 teaching jobs statewide were unfilled at the start of the year and by 1995 vacancies may rise 50 percent.
