11.7 Percent Jobless In Okaloosa County
Okaloosa County's unemployment rate reached 11.7 percent in December 1982, the highest in over a decade, reflecting a nationwide recession. Local official Roy Rish cites major industry layoffs, notably Vitro Service Division and RCA, as factors, with Destin seeing ongoing construction and a spring uptick expected. Surrounding counties show higher rates, while Walton County remains relatively stable. A job fair is planned March 5 at Gulf Coast Community College to connect employers with job seekers in electronics, data processing, programming, and skilled trades.
