Millie McKuhn of Santa Rosa Beach loved Marvin Kalb’s In The National Interest. The book offers a reporter’s eye view of Middle East intrigue and reads marvelously, described as the best she’s read in ages.
The Log columnist recalls ideas from the community amid a hectic newsroom. Readers at grocery stores meetings and pubs offer suggestions while some oddball ideas about Old Pass lagoon as a nuclear plant site or Destin sand spurs surface. A reader describes daily drives from a South Walton homestead to Destin offering a fresh idea during a busy deadline.
A staff comment ponders fines for removing sea oats and proposes a civic project to transplant oats from beaches slated for condominiums to public or eroding dunes. It cites a Florida nursery growing them for restoration and questions feasibility and impact on plant fragility. The writer suggests local groups organize lists of planned condo builds to coordinate plant relocation.
U S Senator Paula Hawkins notes four NFL suspensions for cocaine use by players from the Cardinals Saints and Bengals as part of a broader pattern of drug abuse in sports. She cites a New York Times article reporting many athletes seeking help since 1977 and urges transparency about drugs’ impact on performance and well being.
The commentary cites John Drew of the Utah Jazz and Tim Raines of the Montreal Expos detailing how drugs and alcohol impair performance, judgment, and recovery. It urges sports bodies to recognize abuse, rehabilitate affected players, and take a firm stance against drug use both on and off the field.
A local writer expresses gratitude for support from readers and the Destin Charter Boat Association and DCBA as he discusses accepting a new appointment to represent marine interests. He praises John Cheney and stresses appreciation for letters and telegrams of backing and editorial support from the Destin LOG.
