Reagan Tax Plan Sparks partisan tax deduction debate
A new report contends that most middle class Americans would be hurt by eliminating state and local tax deductions. It claims 51 percent of taxpayers itemize, counting joint returns as two and nonpaying filers as non-taxpayers. The coalition backs the plan while Democrats warn of higher elderly taxes and reduced school funding. Republicans argue overall savings could cut rates, with a compromise to drop only state sales tax deductions. Ken Eskey reports from Scripps Howard News Service.
