Fire officials say dry windy weather and improper tools fueled brush fires around Santa Rosa Beach and Destin last week. A resident burning trash April 1 caused over 100 acres to burn. another 1,000 acres burned near Hewett Bayou. In Destin three small fires flared near Quiet Wood subdivision. Authorities urge permits from the Division of Forestry, burning only from sunrise to an hour after sunrise, and supervision of any burn. Violations could bring fines up to 500 dollars and liability for suppression costs.

Ward notes the bill would set a precedent if a fire district’s 2 mill levy is applied to the city’s millage rate and urges the Finance and Tax Committee to consider implications for other cities. The measure seeks continued fire protection for Destin and future annexations while combining fire protection with state revenue sharing. If the tax portion fails, the bill could be split.
