A series of fires swept through Santa Rosa Beach on Sunday, with emergency crews battling flames along the shoreline and nearby residential areas. Residents reported smoky conditions as firefighters cordoned off blocks while containment efforts continued into the night.
Destin moves to build a small scale recreational complex with a soccer and football field plus a possible practice field. About five to six acres adjacent to Destin Elementary School will be cleared with Okaloosa County School Board support. The project seeks clay from the county commission for the field foundations and will use roughly 10 to 12 acres of the 20 acre school site. A 30 foot buffer will separate fields from adjacent private property. Cleanup begins with tree removal, per Superintendent Pledger Sullivan, with access to be arranged from the pulpwood operators.
Destin city council split over using a 1984 error to include 2000 plus acres in city bounds. They wait for Rep. James Ward's opinion on charter amendments and set a special meeting to decide actions, with Ward possible tweaks to the Indian Bayou exclusion.

Indiana's 38 year old Evansville native Janelle Watts won a 3.3 million share of a 6.8 million Illinois Lotto prize while visiting Destin Florida. She will collect 165000 annually for 20 years and plans to buy a Lincoln Town Car. Watts supports state lotteries for education and senior programs, says she still works at J C Penney and continues to play weekly.
