REIMS FRANCE AP Germany surrendered unconditionally to the western Allies and Russia at 2 41 a m French time Monday The surrender took place at a little red school house headquarters of General Eisenhower The surrender ends five years eight months six days of war signed for Germany by Col Gen Gustav Jodt chief of staff of the German army for the supreme allied command by Lieut Gen Walter Bedell Smith and by Gen Ivan Sustoparoff for Russia and Gen Francois Sever for France Eisenhower not present but afterward Jodt and Gen Admiral Hans Georg Friedeburg were received by the supreme commander Jodt asked to address the surrender terms and spoke of mercy for the German people and armed forces after signing he said German people and armed forces are far better in worse delivered into the victors hands This war has lasted more than five years both have achieved and suffered more than perhaps any other people in the world
