On Saturday after church services end and Santa rests, children can create thank you notes by pasting pictures from Christmas cards or wrapping paper onto index cards. They may also wad wrapping paper to improvise ammunition for a lighthearted outdoor battle on Christmas afternoon to release built up tension.
Des Moines Parks and Recreation will bus skiers to Afton Alps near Hastings on January 15 with a January 7 reservation deadline. Cost includes 14.95 for bus fare 7.50 for a lift ticket six for ski rental. Lessons available free for beginners. Call 283-4987 for details.
Southeast Des Moines residents can call 288-4507 about activities at 2501 Maury St. A family roller skating party is planned for this Sunday, an elementary age theater party next Thursday, a Monday event for elementary youngsters, and a Wednesday session for junior high students. Auditions for Chekhov drama Uncle Vanya call for four men and four women at the First Unitarian Church on Bell Avenue and Casady Drive. Sessions Sunday at 2 p.m. and Monday at 7 30 p.m. Performances run February 16 to 20.

Detroit AP report says WDRQ disc jockey Tom Jeffries legally drank to a .1 blood alcohol level for a safety stunt. Sgt. Frank Deon explained that a .08 percent BAC usually impairs driving. penalties include fines up to $100, jail up to 90 days, and possible license suspension. Jeffries did not drive and quipped he stopped drinking for fries.
The Chicago Daily News profile examines State Senator Richard M. Daley, 34, as the mayor's eldest son, shaped by Mayor Richard J. Daley's drive to make him a lasting power and potential successor, with the mayor narrowing his circle of trusted Democrats as his sons' roles expand.

Washington Crossing, PA AP reports bicentennial re enactment of the 1776 Delaware crossing drawing about 15 000 spectators. St John Terrell plays Washington as a 1 000 volunteers reenact the river crossing amid cold and risk with no bloodshed.
Beef costs paid by shoppers rose 1.6 percent in November marking the first increase in six months while pork prices fell for the fourth straight month. The Agriculture Department noted beef output slackening as cattle slaughter slows, boosting beef prices, and hog production remains up keeping pork prices stable or lower. Futures on grains and livestock extended gains as December options expired.
