Local ads push Liberty Loan bonds as a patriotic duty. Shoppers encounter Weis man Good Luck Sale with discounts on ladies waists dresses and shirts as Dermott promotes bond purchases and wartime finance. Community notes cover rent rooms, car purchases, Red Cross plans and school graduation events.
The regular meeting at the annex last Friday afternoon elected officers: President Mrs J C Hoffman, Vice president Mrs J A Bennett, Secretary Mrs M R Hanchey, Treasurer Mrs Joe Cohen. Plans include purchasing a new piano for the school auditorium next year and forming a community canning club.
The fifth Patria episode titled The Island God Forgot shows Patria killing a pursuing pilot during an aerial chase. After being thrown overboard she drifts ashore unconscious on a island that serves as a munitions depot run by anti US plotters. Mrs Vernon Castle stars as Patria and Elaine.
Dermott held an annual school election with 208 votes. C R Bates won a West Dermott annex seat with 134 votes to 63 for H Gaster, G A Franklin won in Dermott proper with heavy support, a 12 mill tax passed by a large margin, while politics influenced some voters. Dr E E Barlow retires from the board after eleven years of service. Bates replaces Bert Nixon who resigned months ago after moving from the West Dermott annex.
The Eudora and Readland schools announce closings this week with programs and recitals. A county directors meeting may be held at Lake Village District No 7. District No 1 debates a rural high school. several schools buy new flags. Louise Moore slated for Endora term. Independence building plans under District No 4. teachers to attend summer schools. Department of Education.
County Judge Toney pushes road improvements across the county with Prestridge and Collins using a new tractor and grader to shape a six mile west of Eudora and the Lake Village to Eudora road. The Lake Village Dermott road should open around June 10. Bridges are promised by August 1 under bond, with hot follow up on contractor progress for the Kelley bridge and northern county connections.
Sunday School attendance reached 128 and League attendance 46. The district conference in Eudora was the best yet. Monticello District now has 68 churches with four representing 34400 dollars of investment. Debts totaling about 15000 on church property have been canceled since last fall. Revival effort planned as May Dermott joins in. J T Crenshaw elected district conference delegate. Pastor notes strong commitment and permanent equipment in several locations.
