Local items report visiting kin from Shelby Mississippi and Little Rock, shoppers urged to Weisman's for bathing suits and groceries, and new lines in shoes and furniture. Town notes include residents leaving for Ferriday and New Orleans, a July church and school agenda, plus a meeting to oppose telephone rate hikes and to retain a superintendent.
A special train will run from here to Lake Village tomorrow Friday, leaving at a.m. Returning it will leave Lake Village about 5 p.m. The train will consist of seven coaches likely to be needed for the crowd. Road conditions are poor as Lake Village road was found not passable, making car travel unlikely.
Harvey Parnell of Dermott announced his candidacy for Commissioner of State Highways opposing William B Owen. Parnell, a farmer and stockman, drew favorable notice in state capital political circles after last term in the Chicot county delegation. Owen indicated he does not expect to seek re election after three terms.
Major Paul Johnson of Holly Grove arrives at Camp Pike after a notable World War II career in France. He was promoted to major and served as regimental surgeon for the 151st Infantry, escaping wounds during Argonne fighting. He plans a home visit and expects discharge after leaving Camp Pike.
A large Dermott delegation including most pupils and many supporters will depart tomorrow morning by rail to Lake Village for the annual county school contest. Dermott hopes to win most honors with reps in piano, declamation, voice, and track, plus chorus participation from all grades.
The Everybody Revival is set for Dermott in June under the Presbyterian church. Rev. Geo. W. Belk of Hendersonville NC will preach and Rev. A. T. L. Carter will lead singing. Dermott Christians are urged to cooperate for a successful meeting.
Dermott and local business leaders rallied at the eleventh hour to fully subscribe the Victory Bonds quota. Banks stepped up with the Exchange Bank & Trust Co and Dermott Bank & Trust Co leading the effort, earning praise from the Victory Loan chairman K. W. Baxter. District Headquarters in St Louis sent hearty congratulations to the cooperative teams and workers. a formal list of contributors will be published next week.
The Dermott Committee on the Jewish Relief Fund has been appointed by County Chairman Rosenzweig of Lake Village. Lod Wynne serves as chairman with EB Kittpel as secretary, BOP Remley treasurer, and WD Trotter as chairman of the executive group alongside Daniel, Co Helmstetter, and L. M. Belser.
