The regular monthly Board of Trade luncheon last Thursday featured WD Trotter as toast master. Fifteen out-of-town guests attended while Dr G W Belk Hendersonville and Mr McCrea Little Rock gave toasts. Chaplain Gee Army, Harris Aviation Corps, Board Little Rock, Atty Rogers Arkansas City, Judge EP Toney Jake Village attended. Music by Dr. Berendsohn’s Orchestra and two vocal numbers by Rev A L Carter Springfield Mo.
On Friday last Dermott witnessed an aerial circus above the city. A squadron from Eberts Aviation Field Lonoke performed loop the loop nose spins and other feats thrilling residents. The steady buzz of airplanes drew public attention away from daily tasks as the unseen birds overhead delighted onlookers.
Rev N Smylie learned his son Theo Smylie a chaplain in the LS&S Army was cited for exceptional gallantry and distinguished service on September 1. The notice from government officials was signed by General Pershing. Chaplain Smylie now near Coblenz with the American Army of Nations.
The Dermott Bank and Prust Company award Baxter and Blythe a 4000 contract for bank building upgrades including enlarging a room remodeling interiors and adding a stone front. The project also includes removing the elevated sidewalk and paving the street between the bank and new garage. Mrs J D Perry contracts Gilliam and Duerson to build a six room cottage on South Main Street begin this week. Franklin contracts Baxter and Blythe to erect a seven room brick bungalow style residence on South Main Street north of A R Walker home.
After ten days of services preacher Dr Belk will close the revival next Sunday night at the tent. Daily morning and evening services feature strong Bible teaching, with Mr Carter directing music and leading congregational singing. Special men’s meetings are held each afternoon at three in a downtown store. Nurses welcome the public to all events.
Beginning July 1 the price of first class letters drops to two cents and postcards to one cent. Three cent stamped envelopes and two cent domestic postcards will still be sold. All three cent envelopes and two cent postcards may be redeemed at full value during July. In Dermott city delivery is reestablished so drop letters stay at two cents.
