Local notices show a board of Trade meeting this Thursday evening at the Hotel Dermott auditorium. The event includes references to officers and a fire sale at Courtney's with extended sales at The Novelty and The Alex theater promotions.
G Lowery, a salesman for the Dermott Grocery and Commission Co., learned yesterday of his wife’s death in Missisippi while visiting relatives. He left immediately for Cotesville as The News goes to press. The death occurred at her home late Tuesday night. Friends here report the tragedy as a distressing event.
A surprise birthday dinner was held Monday evening at Mrs Porter's home on Pecan Street. Guests included Mr and Mrs Porter, Miss Farrar, Jane and Edna Carmichael, Miss Pugh, Miss Patient, Miss Cochran, Miss Foster, and Mr Melton, with table decorations of white flowers.
Stockholders at Exchange Bank & Trust Co. declared a 5 percent semiannual dividend and added 10 percent of net earnings to the surplus. Directors reduced from 11 to 7. Dermott Bank & Trust Co. also re elected all officers and directors with a 5 percent dividend. Dermott Grocery & Commission Co. re elected all officers and directors for another year.
The Dermott Rook Chit held its first meeting of the year at Mrs. Ro Ford’s home. President Madle Hoffman and Treasurer LB Gillham were reelected. Prizes awarded for year long scores went to Mrs. Mo R. Hanchey and Mrs. LB Gillham with Mrs. CG. Nivisen as consolation. New members Mrs. Lee Woolfolk and Mrs. No W. Nichols joined. Next meeting to be hosted by Mrs. RK Gillham.
The regular meeting of the jych will be held tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock. Members urged to attend and vote on the hour for meeting. Program includes Roll Call, quotations on school, and talks by Mrs H K Courtney Mrs J C Hoffman Mrs J A Bennett and Mrs R W Lane with committee reports.
The church holds Sunday School at 10 a.m. Preaching at 11 a.m. and 7 15 p.m. Epworth League at 3 p.m. Prayer Meeting at 7 15 p.m. on Wednesdays. Pastor is J L Cannon.
A chaotic night sees a box social raid by Marshal Ab Purvedh and Constable No Fried man followed by gunfire wounding both officers above the right ankle. A negro suspect fled toward Eudora as fires break out at W. W. Courtney Goods Store and threats loom over the block. Mrs Clyte McCruskey misses a train after the alert.
The School Board and Faculty Meeting will be held tomorrow at the school auditorium at so clock. Patrons of the school are invited to attend. A. Helmster Dr E. E. Barlow, President.
Dr. Smith makes first Dermott visit and plans to cover many southern Arkansas towns expanding from Louisiana. He treats refractive errors with in home visits via his solicitor and offers examinations and corrections to patients with eye problems.
The basketball team played Til last Friday and lost by two points in their first game. Despite the defeat, players remain enthusiastic and look forward to another match. School closes for the year with new classes starting this week in advanced agriculture bookkeeping elementary agriculture and Arkansas history. Agriculture students will have demonstration plots at the Athletic park to learn theory and practice. The School Improvement Association plans playground equipment purchases to benefit younger grades. Efforts aim to have school representation at upcoming state meetings and contests this spring.
