Prothro’s displays a gold wrist watch as second prize in the automobile contest. Voting continues with ballots and prizes distributed by standings. Mentions Miss Hazel Bordeaux visiting, R P Stinson returning to Rogers, and Bowden’s Market promotions.
Dermott merchants advertise porch swings, stoves, jars, and silk garments while promoting sales. Local officials and residents are noted visiting, moving, or preparing for school opening. church services, town events, and a film program at the Alex are announced amid various social notices.
All children are warned to keep away from dipping vats and pens on dipping days. If necessary for a child to bring cattle to the vat, dipping will be properly looked after, but children must stay out of the pens by order of authorities.
Norma Helmstetter and Captain Fred O. Freemyer were married at the bride’s home on South Meridian Street Portland. The ceremony featured a pink and white decor laden altar with ferns and roses, a ring ceremony carried by niece Ida Jane Holmes, and a formal supper. The groom is a Purdue graduate and former Philippines government employee who joined Fort Benjamin Harrison officers training. they plan to relocate to Louisville Kentucky for military duties after August 27.
County white schools open Sept 17 while colored schools start about a month later. County Institute begins Sept 10 at Lake Village with State Dept of Education instructors. Districts adopt state books this September and compulsory attendance law is enforced. Consolidation plans for rural high schools advance in Districts 1 and 10. Bayou Macon pushes for an at home modern high school. The piece urges better janitor service and school readiness before term starts.
Miss Annie Jo Guise will return September 10 to open her piano harmony ear training and music history classes. A Henderson-Brown College director of music cites a pupil as exceptionally qualified for the junior music class. Additional testimonials come from University of Arkansas Galloway College Virginia College Roanoke Wanda-Belmont Smith College Northampton and others. Guise trained in top New York City and Chicago schools and earned highest honors at the Normal School of Music. She has several years teaching experience preparing pupils for superior advancement.
