Shorthorn Kills Man On Cattle Car

A young shorthorn bull killed William Calder near Libertyville as he fought the enraged animal while penned in a stockcar. Calder tore the bull’s eyelids in a bid to blind it, and the beast, unsettled by train motion, stood over the body.

Aged Confederate Chief Gen Alexander P Stewart Dies

Gen Alexander P Stewart, one of the last two surviving Confederate lieutenant generals, dies at his Biloxi Mississippi home aged 87. Born October 2 1821 in Rogersville Tennessee, he graduated West Point 1842 and served in the Civil War ending the war in command of the Army of Tennessee. He married Harriet B Chase in Warren Ohio in 1845. she died in 1898.

Major New Orleans fire destroys wholesale district

A center city blaze in New Orleans originating at Bienville and Chartres swept three blocks, wiping out wholesalers and manufacturers. The fire, estimated at about 2 million dollars, spread toward Conti and Theval streets as firemen rushed from a suburban picnic to battle the flames. Losses included Central Glass, lighting instruments, wholesalers, millinery, liquor dealers, boots and shoes firms, and more.

John H. Briggs aged 62 a millionaire cattle raiser killed himself at his Attica home by shooting himself in the head while facing a mirror. He served in the Civil War with the 135th Indiana volunteers.

Hypnotism Key in Hitchcock Case at New York Inquiry

Dr. I T Van Gleason testified he hypnotized Mrs Hitchcock in a cell and secured her first account of the shooting. She claimed her husband Bob fired on her thrice then shot himself as a dark man and a policeman entered. The witness said she was insane at the time but sane later.

The City National Bank of Norman Oklahoma with capital 50000 and deposits 200000 yields to depositor pressure and converts from federal to a state charter becoming the First State bank under the state guarantee law. President J C Jonas claims reluctance but states the move was forced by depositors. A new bank named State Sayings Bank appears, with stockholders and directors drawn from the First National and deposits of 400000.

Beer dumped into sewer after confiscation in Oklahoma City

Eight hundred barrels of beer valued at $8,000 owned by a local brewing company were emptied into a sewer in Oklahoma City in the presence of State Dispensary Agent Hubert E K Lesier and Internal Collector Charles Howard. Two thousand people attended hoping to salvage some, but none could be saved as photographers recorded the event. The beer was on hand when a State law took effect.

Julius Leck, doorman at the Delancey Street police station in New York, towed two rowboats carrying nine persons. He swam from a point near Blackwell's Island to the Cygnet Boat Club's house on Rast Fighty Fourth Street, a voyage lasting about twenty minutes.
