Letter From Irvin Bell Describes Florida Everglades and Camp Life

In a vivid diary style letter from Pasco Beach Fra dated 8 30 98 Irvin Bell recounts a hasty Everglades trip near the coast. He details Grace family homesteads their sparse palm thatched cottages and self sufficient diet while noting alligators palm fans and the 25 cent supper. He then appraises life at a hospital with 431 inmates convalescing and 1200 sick across three divisions Panama Jacksonville and Fairfield. He cites overcrowding a 250 bed capacity and upcoming regimental musters and furloughs. Bett reports his appointment as chief clerk to Major Frank E Artand at Pablo Beach Hospital and signs off as a “boy in black.”

Excursion Train Wreck Near Michigan City

An L E A excursion train returning from Indianapolis struck a sand drift near Michigan City at 7 AM. The engine and baggage car toppled, baggageman W J Byers broke a collarbone and suffered bruises, while engineer Harvey Williams and fireman Harry Stewart escaped with minor injuries. Passengers were shaken but mostly unharmed as crews cleared the track and diverted trains via New Buffalo and Belfast.

Daylight Robbery at Cul Jett Farm Home

Last Friday a thief entered the Cul Jett farm home near town through an open window while Bond and family helped neighbors thresh. Six finger rings owned by their daughter Miss Gertrude were taken, valued about fifty dollars. two gold watch chains, silverware, and a revolver were left untouched. No clue as to the thief.
