In Rochester on October 7 Mr and Mrs Sam Alkens narrowly escaped death when their car stalled on an Erie crossing as an approaching train struck it. Mrs Alkens was knocked by the car thrown by the train. the car was demolished. In Valparaiso a naptha explosion at the Parker paint factory killed Oliver Smith and seriously injured Omar Wheeler who was hurled about 100 feet. Charles Pratt was thrown from the building vicinity but unharmed.
