Manila dispatch reports Gen. Luna is pressing to curb educated Filipinos from contacting Americans and even orders the arrest of Encamino and Herrera while they head to Malolos. The government seat move to Tarlac risks delaying the preification. generals Wheaton and Funston receive new assignments as U.S. sovereignty faces pressure.
The weekly feature notes renewed demand for wheat cereals and iron in the central west with solid pig iron buying. raw wool also strengthens while western crop reports, insect damage, and weak export activity temper price gains. Buffalo grain handlers strike slows grain movement to seaboard. lumber demand remains excellent.
The New York World reports Gen. Brooke refused the President's instruction to turn Cuban arms to U S army officers and agreed with Gomez to surrender them to Cuban city mayors. Secretary Alger is angry and telegraphed the President with full details, signaling a delay in distributing eight million dollars to the Cuban army.
Reports from Michigan fruit belt trader growers indicate hundreds of peach trees are dying at the roots from severe February cold. Trees bloomed normally and sap circulated, but frozen roots halted circulation causing green fruit to dry and drop. Many leading growers face ruin.
James A. Clemmer was hanged for the murder of Emma Kaiser in October 1896 at Norristown. He and Emma’s husband Charles Kaiser plotted to collect a $20,000 life insurance. Clemmer shot Emma. Kaiser died by his own hand while awaiting execution. Lizzie DeKalb, the woman in black, received a light sentence after confessing.
Mary and Jennie Gibson, 16 year old daughters of George Gibson of Sergent Kentucky, were at a dance when ex Sheriff Shade Combs argued with two men. Believing the girls to be men, Combs fired, mortally wounding Jennie and lightly wounding Mary. Combs surrendered to authorities.
At Evansville Indiana Hiram Boyd fourteen was whipped in Police Court by order of Judge Winfrey. The youth was arrested for disorderly conduct. This marks the fourth public whipping in the city within the past year.
A large Karstadt & Co. warehouse in Brunswick Germany was totally destroyed by fire. Five girls perished in the blaze and several others were injured, with one victim dying subsequently.
Dun and Co. reports a robust week with 71.5 percent higher clearing-house payments versus 1902, iron output reaching 250 095 tons weekly, and shoe shipments signaling strong eastern demand. Hides rise in Chicago and wool prices advance overall while cotton firms. U.S. failures total 165, down from last year. Canada reports 20.
The schooner Nelson, laden with coal, foundered in a fierce Lake Superior gale off Grand Marais Michigan. Nine sailors perished. Captain Andrew Hughwey survived, drifting ashore at Deer Park. Owned by Mitchell Transportation Co of Bay City, Nelson had loaded coal at Ashtabula on its first trip.
A group of Cuban dock laborers confronted Capt Barker of the port in Cienfuegos demanding back pay. After a first clash a larger crowd returned, cursing and threatening Barker. Police ordered to arrest the malcontents a street fight ensued leaving one laborer dead and several wounded including three officers.
John Pearson a wealthy farmer was arrested in Fort Scott Kansas by U S officers for obstructing the mails. Earlier he drove to Star Kansas with corn and, after a freight train blocked a side track, stayed on the main line delaying the fast mail train twenty minutes amid threats from officials.
Secretary Long orders the gunboats Annapolis and Vicksburg out of training service for refitting as gunboats, to be replaced by Hartford and Pensacola in Pacific waters. Ten ships will train boys to seamen and gunners. Amphitrite and Lancaster move north, new classes form. In Arkansas, forty strikers attack twenty five black miners at mine No 53 near Huntington, two guards killed and wounded. miners brought from Illinois.
Formosa reports a brutal attack near Taiko in the central district. About sixty savages ambushed thirty unarmed villagers, killing twenty nine and allowing only one survivor. The dispute over paternity of a child allegedly sparked the conflict, with head hunting cited as a supposed justice.
Consul Brush reports to Washington from Clifton Ontario on Klondike wash-up for 1890. Dawson sources say Yukon output will total 19 million dollars, with major shares to Hiderado Bonanza French Hill Gold Hill Big Skukum Little Skukum Dominion and quartz. Several sites such as Sulphur creek Stewart river Upper Klondike and Scroggle creek are omitted.
A massive blaze starting in John A Gauger & Son sash factory ruined five lumber and woolwork firms in Chicago. Total losses near 400000 with three plants destroyed and 150 workers jobless. Principal hit on S T Gunderson at 250000, Gauger 30000, Rathbone Hart Ridgway 120000, Pilsen Lumber 20000. Fire traced to a steam pipe explosion.
A report describes lawyer Clark injured by a pocket safety match safe explosion causing cut hands. Separate item notes Rudolf Riese, former Berlin fugitive with 200000 marks, arrested at Leipzig, reportedly committed suicide.
A south bound local halted by Athens County sheriff and deputies over a $5,000 back tax. The North bound crew swapped cars to fare past the hold up. The conductor sped to Morgan County to outrun pursuit, avoiding capture.
A clash erupted in Alva Oklahoma between prohibitionists and liquor interests leaving about a dozen citizens wounded. Reverend Alexander Ross shot at Gene Hardwick in Hardwick's saloon. both men were mortally wounded along with six others as officers struggled to control the crowd.
A new bicycle trust in Trenton New Jersey forms as the American Bicycle Company with 80 million capital and 100 factories. A. G. Spalding of Chicago and New York will head the monopoly, with 35 million in 7 percent preferred stock and 45 million in common.
