Fire Roars Through Jacksonville Warnings Amid Devastation
The great fire in Jacksonville Florida destroyed 48 blocks wiping out many buildings causing extensive losses. It began at the Cleveland Fiber Company plant and spread rapidly through Beaver Ashley and Church streets toward Hogan's Creek. Dynamite was used to halt the flames but failed as water and steam proved insufficient. Many landmarks fell including the Windsor Hotel St James Hotel Trinity Church and city buildings. Relief from Atlanta Charleston Detroit New York Boston Chicago and others streamed in as bills for rebuilding were discussed.
