Maj. Gen. MacArthur's division advances to San Fernando and finds the town evacuated. rebels leave a small detachment to cover train retreat while burning streets are controlled. Lawton still at Ralinag. Idaho and California regiments attacked near San Pedro Mal.
Constantinople correspondent reports Sultan authorizes Oscar S. Straus to telegraph President McKinley Turkey will pay the $100,000 claimed for destruction of American missionary property during the 1895 Armenian massacres.
A major blaze consumes nearly all the Moody business section with losses around 25000 dollars and 8000 dollars insured. Authorities believe arson. Byron Dutton is jailed on the charge. Volunteer fireman J W Maxwell died in a powder explosion during the blaze.
Twenty thousand barrels of oil burned in a tank near Morgantown Pennsylvania. Losses including tanks and incidentals reach about eighty thousand dollars. Pumping station and nearby homes were briefly endangered but danger passed and conditions returned to normal.
Official assurances to the government state the agreement between Great Britain and Russians on spheres of influence in China concerns only the two parties and does not affect U S interests. Two excursion trains carrying crowds bound for Lake Ontario shore points left the rails near Rochester New York. Two cars derailed at full speed on a curve, wrecked and toppled. At least two killed and more than a dozen seriously injured with many others hurt. The accident happened about a half mile north of the city as engines and cars separated after a sudden coupler break.
In Lowndesboro Alabama Samuel Powell umpire for the Reds was killed by Frank McCoy of the Blues after a disputed foul ball incident. McCoy struck Powell with a bat following a confrontation, causing instant death during a seventh inning at bat.
A St Louis police officer named Harry J Jhumger, 37, killed himself after his wife could not supply a clean underwear. He had worked all night and planned to rest later, then shot himself when the request was refused. The report notes he had been on the force for a year. In Cleveland Ohio two hundred lay workers struck for an eight hour day and 250 pay before noon they returned to work having secured their demands. Two hundred plasterers struck for three dollars a day eight hours. About fifty hodcarriers demanded a 50 cent raise to two dollars a day. Seventy five structural iron workers walked out seeking 35 cents an hour and an eight hour day.
Mrs. Samuel Blair of Edgar Oklahoma recently sold a farm near Coffeyville Kansas for 3000 dollars and moved with her husband to Edgar Oklahoma. They were joined by a long time hired man and his wife. A few nights ago Blair and the hired man’s wife disappeared along with Mrs Blair’s money a fine saddle horse and saddle and some clothing.
Jerome Peck 54 of Sedalia Missouri a Civil War veteran died by his own action using a heavy wire tied to a rafter and looped around his neck then leaped from a second story window the fall broke his neck and cut his throat from ear to ear. The report also mentions a large mining clash at Wardner Idaho and two marriages in one day with an elopement in Michigan and wedding at St Paul.
In Tiffin Ohio a can of oil paint exploded during a game killing 14 year old Paul Hoffman and severely burning 12 year old Frank Bondage. The boys were playing with paint and touched a match to it.
The State Department intends to compel Honduras and Nicaragua to address alleged abuses of American citizens. Talks on the Pears case were rejected for arbitration, with pressure for immediate settlement. If the $10,000 indemnity is not paid, a squadron may be sent to enforce payment. Navy concern stems from missed cablegrams to Commander Dayton at Bluefields.
Creditors file six-figure, multi-million dollar claims in Federal Court at Columbus against the Columbus Hocking Valley and Toledo Railway Company. The Guaranty Trust Company seeks 2,087,803 dollars on bond principal and interest. M. B. Ingalls and George H. Gardiner sue for 4,970,761 dollars on 7 9 30 5 per cent bonds. They also sue for 2,198,560 dollars on 1 693 joint mortgage bonds.
A blaze of unknown origin in Philadelphia destroyed Charles Bacharach's clothing store at Thirteenth Street and Ridge Avenue. Before suppression, about fifteen nearby buildings, mostly small dwellings, were badly damaged. Total loss around $140,000 to $150,000, insured. the store burned to a shell with workers escaping amid the flames.
Banker Alexander Masterson was lured into a room at the Burlington apartment house in New York and shot dead by retired merchant James Neagle Plumb. Plumb had with him two long typewritten statements detailing the lead up to the murder, the culmination of a long running feud over family affairs and estates.
Grace Crow of Findlay Ohio crippled Remus Denigan s bicycle by firing a revolver at his home when he was not there. She was arrested jailed and later sued Denigan for breach of promise seeking $2000.
The article notes Martin Kelley and his son Garret of Monsey arresting for hanging Richard Bayles to force a confession about a theft. In Buffalo a clash between Connors Kennedy shovellers and strikers left William H. Kennedy nephew of a grain shoveling contractor severely wounded and James Hennessy a firefighter slightly injured by a stray bullet. Five shots were fired with only two hitting targets. Skinner was captured. Kennedy, a long time elevator foreman and political activist, survived his wound. the incident ends as the assailant is detained. Separately, Spain releases American Melinder a naturalized citizen held as a prisoner of war since last summer after intervention by the United States and Britain.
Judge Adams of the United States District Court in St Louis refused an application by Edison Electric Light Company for an air injunction against Imperial Electric Light Heat and Power Company to stop use of the three wire system. Immigration Surges At New York Port. Immigrants arriving this spring average over two thousand daily with Italians arriving in large numbers. Armour May Build In Galveston Texas Packing Plant. Missouri Kansas Texas Railroad officials report Armour & Co. plans a large packing house at Galveston.
Chicago Cattle from common to prime range 3.00 to 5.75 with hogs 3.00 to 4.00 and sheep 3.00 to 5.25. Indianapolis cattle 3.00 to 5.50, hogs 2.75 to 4.00, sheep 2.50 to 4.75. St Louis cattle 3.50 to 5.75, hogs 3.00 to 4.00, sheep 3.00 to 5.25. Detroit and Cincinnati notes include varied wheat corn oats rye prices. Milwaukee and Buffalo add regions and seed prices. New York lists cattle hogs sheep and dairy prices.
Negotiations for peace in the Philippines fail as Filipino envoys and General Otis keep the same armistice proposal. Otis refuses, ending talks. Americans bolster offensives under Lawton Hale while Aguinaldo Luna seek time to reassemble. War Department expects renewed vigor and more troops.
Reports from Manila recount Gen. Wheaton's capture of Santo Tomas after a fierce fight with insurgents, followed by rout and fire. Trawton's brigade crossed Maasand river, stormed entrenched positions, and pushed enemy north as MacArthur's division and Luna clashed four miles south of San Fernando. Hale and Wheaton led decisive charges with heavy casualties among officers and men.
