The wooden Northfield ferry, in service 38 years for Staten Island, sank after a collision with the Mauch Chunk near the Whitehall street slip. Captain Gully reported 25 to 30 passengers plunged into the water, with over 100 feared dead. Bodies not yet recovered.

Five Negroes Hanged at Sylvania Ca Jail Yard
Arnold Augustus Andrew Davis Richard Sanders Wm Hudson and Samuel Baldwin, all negroes, were executed in the county jail yard at Sylvania California. Four necks broke on the fall while one died by strangulation. They marched with soldiers to the scaffold, spoke briefly, received spiritual consolation, drank lemonade from the sheriff, and thanked him. None denied guilt.
