Frelinghuysen proposes enlarged tariff commission

The proposal would expand the tariff commission to ten members with salaries of 12,000 each and tenures of office. By December 1, 1923 the commission must report on conversion cost differences and recommend duty rates. A $1,000,000 fund would support extended duties to provide expert scientific conclusions free of personal or party pressure.

One in Every Seven Officers Must Go in Army Cut

The War department estimates roughly 2000 or more officers must leave civil life by January 1 next year under the army appropriation compromise. Reductions target colonels to first lieutenants and various staff corps, with a total not exceeding 1200 officers after January 12, 1923. The service now lists 12,822 officers. older officers face demotion or retirement due to strains from World War I duties.

Indiana corn and wheat crop forecasts and local notices

Indiana Department of Agriculture on July 1 projects corn at 170,749,000 bushels and wheat at 2,048,000. Indiana ranks seventh in corn with 4,705,000 acres and a 82 percent condition.
