On the way to Manchester last week readers find farmers busy with harvests and hay. Notable locals Tobias Gusher and William Krieg are highlighted for crops, barns, and family. Denver firms Kessler Brothers are praised for tin roofing and ironwork. The column laments heat, urges humane horse care, and praises Geo. B. Lockwood's literary essays for the Peru Republican.
Oran Edgerton suffered a stroke leaving him unconscious overnight. Grace Lunsford visited Laura Martin and Maude Newman held a surprise party for fifty friends. A Sunday school basket meeting is planned July 18 at Rockover’s grove near Twelve Mile. Adams To graduates host July 17 at Corinthian Church. William has painting work on his barn. George Brower welcomed a daughter. Thomas Skinner led harvest. Lt. Egman thresh. haymaking thrives in good weather. Eel River Chapel basket meeting drew about one thousand attendees with Sister Strickland in charge. altar mourned former pastor Kendal West who died in Kokomo June 25. Letha and Clarence Woolley visiting grandparents T H Skinner. Ice cream supper at Elisha Bockover’s residence noted.
The day evening was a success and the white male appears tired standing at the post on Saturday evenings. The Christian Ladies Aid Society met at the church on Wednesday afternoon and discussed a future festival. Misses Florence and Clara Bockover and Laura Martin visited Mrs. Mary Irvin, while Miss Gertie Rimpler spent last week in Logansport visiting her sister, Mrs. Mort Eurit.
It has been very difficult to keep cool the past week as the weather has been so extremely hot. It is more pleasant now, rains having fallen around us. Very little fell in this locality and we hope our portion will come soon. The wheat is about all out of this neighborhood, most of the corn laid by and growing very, rapidly. Misa Anna Guyer, who had partially recovered from her severe and lingering illness, was quite sick that week but is better again. Also Misdes Clara and Vera have been sick during the past week but are recovering now. We sympathize with them in their affliction. Mrav Nancy Leffel, of near Twelve Mile, visited relatives in this vicinity the ser part of the week, returning to ther home on Saturdayy. th
Ira Cool, previously prostrated by heat, returned to the field against employer Henry Lewis's advice. He collapsed mid afternoon, died before Dr. Wittwer could reach him. Funeral held at the Baptist church with Rev. J B Bair officiating, interment in Weasaw cemetery.
Myrtle Stoler visits Ft Wayne relatives while Lucile Erasperger heads to Peru for the county normal. Perry township fields ample experienced teachers. many locals attend social events, shop at Kessler tin shop, and await postmaster W. O. Piper’s appointment. Community notices cover churches, picnics, auctions, and local business promotions.
The M. E. Sunday School holds its fourth annual picnic on Saturday July 24 1897 in Krathwell woods four miles south of town. Good speakers have been secured and all Sunday Schools are invited to attend in delegations. Everyone is urged to come and help make the picnic a success. W Wricur Cor Sec
