Soldiers at Camp Cuba Libre near Jacksonville
A letter from a correspondent in August 1808 describes travel from Indianapolis to Jacksonville in a humid rail journey through Florida. He details Camp Cuba Libre with seven regiments, the 9,000 men including hospital units, Pablo Beach recuperation, and malaria. He notes army rationing, camps Wairfield Panama with Hoosierdam, and expresses concern about soldiers’ conduct amid local gambling dens and drinking. He mentions Havana, the 7th Army Corps, and hopes to share more later.
