France special reports Maitre Labori, counsel for Dreyfus, left his home for court when two men hidden in a lane fired a single shot. He was struck in the back and fell. the assailants fled through a nearby gate and escaped.

The first distillery run by Moses Long yielded 1200 gallons of beer and 30 gallons of low wine destroyed. The second, run by GW Lanham, yielded a similar amount and was destroyed though Lanham escaped.
C S Pope confectionery store proprietor with gambling room was shot by former partner J Serome in Fremont Neb. Five shots hit Pope as they argued over their old partnership. Serome captured by a sheriff posse and jailed. Pope says self defense.

J L Greene of Fort Scott Kansas dies after a duel with a Cuban officer in Sancti Spiritus Cuba. Greene who graduated from Fort Scott Normal College in 1892 served in the regular army later joined the Cuban army and the Rough Riders. He was 28.
Near Riverfront Park in Denver a man named George Bond was found wounded in the breast and weak from blood loss. Later Goldie McConkey's body was found with two bullet wounds in her breast. Bond denies killing his sweetheart and says an unknown shooter fired on them both.
A rash of arson targets rancher A. E. Rich on the Cheyenne River, with losses over $5,000 in ten days, follows a dwelling and barn blaze. A train of 506 horses near Billings suffers mass poisoning after water stops. seven people die in an Ottawa express wreck. Prices and crops slide as markets report varied gains and losses across major cities.
An immense hurricane lashes Porto Rico and nearby islands, causing nearly 1,000 deaths and extensive property loss. Over 500 bodies recovered, Porto Rico towns like Ponce and San Juan hit hard, with food and relief efforts by the War Department and Gen. Davis under way. The weather service is urged to improve forecasting and communication for future storms. The U.S. government orders 600,000 pounds each of rice and beans sent to Porto Rico as immediate aid.
