Telegraph dispatch from Pretoria reports a plotted attack to shoot all British officers and capture Lord Roberts. About fifteen conspirators planned to burn western city houses and forcibly enter officer homes, killing occupants, with Boer sympathizers aware of the plan and tasked to seize Lord Roberts and move him to a commando.
Travana special: Martin C. Fosnes acting director general of posts appeared personally Thursday against Estes Rathbone, the deposed director, offering additional evidence in the court of first instance. Deputy Auditor Lawshe, investigating Rathbone's accounts, disallows items over $25 000 including unauthorized personal expenditures and payrolls with questionable contracts. Trial likely to begin in early September. Rathbone declined to comment.
The Union Metallic Cartridge Company of Bridgeport Connecticut races to fulfill orders from several governments for ammunition. Major Krag and field artillery rounds are produced in sizes from one to twelve pounds as the U S government readies for potential conflict amid tensions with China and sizable war preparations.

War Department transmits General Chaffee cable noting Peitsang fell to Japanese forces early Thursday with English and American support. Japanese losses described as considerable while English losses were slight and American losses none. American troops halted in rear positions by morning operations.
New York special reports Judge Lacombe issued an opinion stating Neely’s extradition will be ordered on August 18. He notes two pending sets of charges against Neely in Cuba and indicates the charges in the current case will be withdrawn before extradition is granted.
Eight American students from the University of Munich were detained in Loewin Germany after disturbing the scene and assaulting a waiter who is seriously injured. The United States Embassy has not intervened at this time.
A fire completely destroyed the Shalby Steel Tube company and the Boston Electroduct company works at Beaver Falls Pennsylvania. The blaze caused about $300000 in damage. The origin of the fire is unknown and the loss was fully covered by insurance.
Washington officials react to Minister Congers cipher dispatch detailing attacks on international representatives in Pekin and a Chinese-government plan to assassinate key figures. The telegram to the President from Canton confirms imperial troops firing daily and asserts Chinese government responsibility for the crisis. Acting Secretary Atee briefed Secretary Root, who then met the President at the White House.
