The Ute Indian reservation of 800000 acres will open May 4 at noon for homesteaders. Settlers pay 50 cents per acre at filing, with no more than 160 acres per claimant. Improvements must be appraised and sold at auction to highest bidder before public sale. Durango Colorado, population 8000, hosts the reservation hub and rail terminal.
The USS Sheridan formerly the Massachusetts arrived at Manila on February 19 from New York carrying the twelfth and a battalion of the Seventeenth Infantry. On April 11 Lieut Meyer disappeared after sleeping on a deck during extreme heat and is presumed to have fallen overboard. Three privates and six children of privates died of pneumonia aboard or near the ship.

Carl Leckarr, a tramp, shot Mrs. James Hutsler near South Charleston four times including head and mouth wounds after asking for water. He fled but was trapped by Marshal Allen’s men in Jeffersonville. Authorities held him in Washington Court House amid lynching threats.
The stern wheel steamer John K Speed sank after drifting from its Louisville dock and hitting the Kentucky dam area. All 109 aboard were uninjured, with water flooding the hold through a jagged hole aft of the boilers. The vessel settled on the rock bottom but everyone stayed dry.

Harry Ketcham of Laporte Indiana was dragged from a Lake Shore train platform at Grand Crossing Chicago by two men who forced him into a box car. They rifled his pockets took $6 a gold watch and a ring then bound and gagged him before fleeing. He freed himself after about thirty minutes and sought police.
An Adams case like poisoning occurred in Hastings Nebraska when a box of bon bons bearing a prominent society woman’s card was left at Mrs. C F Morey’s studio. Mrs Morey and several friends ate the candy and fell ill, later learning the cardholder denied sending it. The incident remains a mystery.
A wildfire swept through Oshkosh scorching two large factories and several minor plants. The Choate Hollister Furniture Company kiln fire destroyed a four story frame building in about thirty minutes, with total losses around 125000 for factory and stock. J A Barnes owned the Star foundry machine works with a 20000 loss on buildings and machinery. Separately the American Linseed Oil Company of Chicago announced acquisition of four Twin Cities mills including Douglas Co Minnesota Linseed Oil works and St Paul Linseed Oil Co, the merged capacity reaching about three million bushels yearly.
William K. Vanderbilt Idle Hour on L I was totally burned. No lives were lost and no injuries. W K Vanderbilt Jr and his bride formerly Miss Virginia Fair occupied the house at the time. Total loss estimated between 250000 and 300000 dollars.
The State Department cannot issue a warrant to surrender Santiago Morphy to Mexican authorities. Morphy, an embezzling employee of the Mexican National Bank, is held in Kansas City as extradition treaty ratification by the Mexican congress remains pending. Dr. Nancy Guilford Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter.
William Kinneman was tarred and feathered by twelve masked men in Deerfield township Ohio for alleged improper relations with the wife of William Hidenour who is currently serving a workhouse sentence. Kinneman has fled the country.

Fern held heavy life insurance, leading to suspicions of a staged crime to protect the policy.
