Julius H. Sistek, 17, of Chicago, killed himself by setting his bed ablaze. A policeman and his elder sister moved the body as the burning bed was thrown from a window. Despondent over losing his job with A. C. McClurg & Co, he left two letters explaining the act.
A Belt Line engine collided with a Calumet electric car at Ninety-fourth street and Stony Island avenue Chicago injuring three and frightening fifteen others. The motorman tried to stop as the crossing came into view but slippery rails prevented braking and the engine struck the car. Eighteen occupants were in the electric car. The front vestibule was demolished and a hole ripped in the side.
Texas and Southwest cattle growers plan to form the International Cattle Growers' Association to divert shipments from Chicago and Kansas City toward St. Louis. Promoters include stockyards men in St Louis and East St Louis. W. W. Johnson of Strawn, Texas, will convene a meeting of dealers and shippers in St Louis on October 1 to back the effort.
Representatives of the National Iron Founders Association and the International Iron Molders Union failed to settle on a wage scale after a two day Cincinnati meeting. Capt Louis Ostheim U S Artillery was found dead in his room at the Auditorium Annex Chicago with a bullet in his temple and a revolver beneath him. He apparently committed suicide the night before his wedding to Mrs Iva Bruce Wood.
