Farmers rally to aid foreign hunger with corn drive

Miami county farmers join Gift Corn Campaign to ship car loads of grain. Donations to be delivered April 8 in the south and April 12 in the north, with gifts as large as half a bushel per acre offered to ease famine abroad.

A concert will be held at the Denver Methodist Church on Friday evening April 15. Virginia Ruse pianist Dunlap vocalist Wilodene Mae Tryman reader will perform under the Denver M E Aid Society auspices. The trio, students of Taylor University, were praised after a March 24 New Castle show despite rain and revivals. Admission 85 cents adults 15 cents children.

Rev Park to Conference in Indiana

Rev H W Park departed Tuesday afternoon for Elwood to attend the Northern Indiana Methodist Conference. The meeting runs through next week and he is likely to be returned to the Denver charge if no better position is offered. Park reported the year closing well, with strong finances for the charge.

Art Club hosts lesson on American painters at Peru home

Mrs. R. A. Edwards of Peru hosted the Art Club last Friday afternoon. Mrs. Russell led the session focusing on independent and impressionist painters including Robert Hewes, William Glackens, George Bellows and Arthur B. Davis.

Peru Merchant John McCarthy Dies Suddenly

John 8. McCarthy a leading Peru shoe merchant died alone in his Broadway store Friday night at about nine. He had been in poor health but was improving when death occurred. Funeral services were held at St. Charles Catholic Church and burial followed in the Catholic cemetery. He operated his own store at 10 South Broadway for about nineteen years after long service at the John S. Hale Store.

Town Board Orders Sidewalks On Emmons Street

At Monday's meeting the Town Board approved a sidewalk along Emmons Street from Harrison Street to the L E W Railroad and then to the town south bounds. A second sidewalk from Harrison Street to the Vandalia right of way was ordered. Hearing and remonstrances are set for May 2. Electric light prospects remain favorable but no definite news.

Painting Dwellings In Town This Week

Mrs W W Kirby on Harrison street receives a four coat paint job by Lee and Mabler. Mrs John Fabl on Washington Street has property painted this week by John Quick. Mrs Mable Musselman’s buildings south of town are being painted and improved to first class condition this week.

Last Lyceum Course Concert by De Wille Trio

The Lyceum Course closes with the De Wille Concert Company of three led by De Wille with Concertina Grand performing April 8 at 8 00 pm. Admission is 25 and 50 cents. The act is hailed as the best in the season.

Mexico P T A Holds Last Regular Meeting

The Mexico Parent-Teachers association met at the Mexico Progressive Brethren Church with about fifty members present. E. L. Powell spoke on parent duties to school. D. S. Hood recounted Mexico school history. the old building to be replaced by a new $70,000 structure. Officers were reelected: C. H. Black president, Tony Fisher vice president, Mable Smith secretary treasurer, plus committee members. A bimonthly summer meeting was approved. Denver association debate was postponed. Enrollment reached 93, marking the group as a leading local organization.

Schools close term in Jefferson Township and county

Schools in Jefferson Township end the year this week with seven month terms. Denver and Mexico grade buildings closed on separate days while Denver High School extends four weeks for a commission requirement. Most county grade schools also wrap up this week signaling year end.
