Tomato Can Industry Faces Severe Slump and Recovery
Bradstreet's notes the U S and Canadian tomato canning industry suffered a collapse after two giant 1903 and 1908 packs, with prices dipping to 60 cents on 70 cent costs. A huge consumption spurred by low prices depleted stocks by 1905, growers reduced acreage by half, and hundreds of canneries did not reopen. Prices rose as supply tightens, but output and weather hurt crops. by late 1905 the market shows cautious improvement as 60 percent of annual buying remains ahead.
