Good Roads A Great Help For Caroline County

State Senator E E Goslin of CaroLine County describes how good roads transformed Caroline from a derided sandy area into one of Maryland Eastern Shore’s finest agricultural districts. He credits local citizens John Kent E E Nuttle and the Messenger crew in Federalsburg for funding and building the network, funded largely by private subscriptions and labor. The plan used state aided roads, local contractors, and a 20 percent upfront share, with farms contributing labor. Roads include shells and later asphalt macadam, with proof of increased land values and a bridge over the Nanticoke river.
