Use of Camels in Warfares in the Egyptian Campaign
In 1798 Napoleon organized a camel mounted regiment in Egypt to supplement infantry. It consisted of two squadrons, four companies each, with infantry weapons and long lances, and troops chosen from regular infantry in distinctive dress. The unit trained camels for speed and endurance, reached about six hundred men, and operated about two to eight days per 500 miles. Similar camel troops later formed in Algeria and India, though the Indian unit was disbanded in 1858 as too costly.
