Ferry Bottleneck Strands Vacationers at Chesapeake Bay

On Labor Day crowds lining the Matapeake-Sandy Point ferry suffered lengthy delays as cars queued for passages to the western shore of Chesapeake Bay. Even with two ferries in service, loading pauses stretched lines to over a mile by mid afternoon and two miles at the peak, with last cars ferried after midnight. Plans after the war call for a new vessel to replace the Gov. Albert C. Ritchie and a new slip near Stevensville to shorten the bay crossing and improve Route 404 connections, plus electric loading equipment and wider approaches to speed loading and unloading.
