Pilot And Girl Die In Plane Crash At Harrington
A plane crash at Harrington Airport last Sunday killed pilot N. Chipman Minner and passenger Miss Lelia Mae Macklin. Minner, 36, from Harrington, died minutes after the crash. Macklin, 23, of Lynch Heights Delaware, died hours later in Milford Memorial Hospital. The craft, a two seater monoplane, spun and plunged after a series of loops, tearing into the ground and prompting Civil Aeronautics Administration and local coroner investigations. Minner operated a basket factory and worked at a gas station, offering short sight seeing flights on weekends. He held a private license and was survived by a wife, two children, parents, siblings, and in-laws. The incident occurred about 5:15 p.m. Witnesses described a spin following takeoff, with emergency crews extracting the occupants from the wreckage. Separately, Maryland Civil Defense announced Sept. 21–week Operation Checkup to test warning systems, halt traffic on major bridges, and coordinate sheltering during a RED alert. Governors and state officials urged the public to take cover and stop traffic during the exercise.
