4-H Field Day and Hamp Shire Breeders Show Draws Good Attendance
Favorable weather and farm activity did not keep 800 to 1,000 livestock enthusiasts and families from attending the 4-H field day in Centreville. The Maryland State Fair Board sponsored both events, emphasizing Victory production in 1944, with experts from Ohio State and Maryland Universities discussing wartime feeding and ideal hog types. Grand Champion boar was Hatchers Mercury Pride 32nd, while Worthington Beauty 3rd won best senior gilt. Judge Coffee praised Maryland Hampshire breeders for a top senior sow class with animals from leading 1943 auction sales averaging under $500.

Governor pushes teacher bonus to curb resignations
Governor O Conor outlined a 1.9 million budgeted teacher bonus paid in ten monthly installments from July 1, 1942, with counties funding additional months. He noted 232,000 already paid for July and August and cited defense pay and armed services as key resignation drivers. In Anne Arundel County, Superintendent George Fox reported shortages and claimed the bonus persuaded some teachers to stay. White high schools faced fewer resignations than replacements, while elementary schools faced heavier enrollments, prompting plans for further discussions on staffing and replacements in defense areas.
