When Johnny Comes Marching Home Jobs Will Boil Over
Two days after Pearl Harbor Nate enlisted, Sam joined the Navy, and Dick joined the Marines. Employers promised jobs would be scarce on return, as many workers gain new roles. Unemployment compensation under the Social Security Act will aid families when wages stop. Benefits average about half regular pay, lasting 16 to 20 weeks, depending on state rules and prior earnings. In 1940 many benefited workers remained unemployed after benefits ended.
