Maiden Effort Chapter I A Stormy Meeting on Moldavia Lake
Kelsey Hare an aspiring architect recovering from a breakdown meets Martin Holmes a struggling author during a storm on a Moldavia lake. She later stays at Holmes estate Holmacshoim and learns Holmes story was rejected from a 15000 dollar Purity Pictures contest run by A Leon Snydacker. Kelsey buys the manuscript and adopts Holmes pen name Templeton Sayles. A telegram arrives about the contest and a debutante photograph appears among the finalists triggering a web of schemes as Moby Dickstein pressures Kelsey to play along with the deception.

A. Leon Snydacker and the Park Avenue Plot
Moby Dickstein lays out three points about A. Leon Snydacker a smooth motion picture man who is phony a nut and a trap for luck. He also hints the girl is synthetic and tied to Snydacker through a planned image plus a possible engagement. Kelsey considers backing him as a pal rather than quitting.
