Preston Family Driven Out By Incendiary Fire
Incendiary blaze threatened the home of Preston’s physician Dr. T. B. Marden last Friday. Mrs. Marden was pulled to safety by Officer Philip Wright as the house filled with smoke. The fire, starting in a closet, burned a ground floor room and rafters before the fire company stopped it. Anonymous letters threatening payment of a so called bill were mailed to Dr. Marden and magistrate P. C. Douglass about ten days earlier, written on a stolen typewriter. Officer Wright kept watch, and an elderly aunt heard nighttime noises. This follows a prior suspicious fire in September that destroyed Harvey Parrott’s barn. Wright and State’s Attorney Fred R. Owens are involved in the Parrott case and are investigating this one.
