Maryland Board Cuts 1945 Income and 1946 Real Estate Tax
Maryland's Board of Public Works cut the 1945 income tax to one percent by allowing taxpayers to pay half of the full two percent levy next year. The 1946 real estate tax was reduced from 11 to 10 cents per $100, saving about 1.425 million dollars in total. Governor O Conor cited $1.141 million savings for individuals on income tax and $284 thousand on real estate tax next year, noting the real estate rate becomes the lowest since 1861. The action followed a revenue study and rests on a statute empowering tax cuts when finances warrant. A prior surplus of 13.4 million was reduced by appropriations, leaving about 1.2 million in reserve. State revenues are expected to rise with gaming returns and stronger corporate taxes.
