A Washington tor dispatch recounts peculiar Indian tiger beliefs among the uneducated about ghostly tiger riders and divine sustenance. It then notes a village tiger encounter where police ruled Pandu died of a tiger crime with bones and fingers left as evidence.
A student at an English college defies college rules by keeping a barrel of ale in his room to use as a daily tonic. The president questions him and the student explains the barrel helps him now carry it easily, claiming medical advice and a daily measure. In a rural village schoolroom last winter a lecturer claimed astronomical facts to skeptical villagers. An old man challenged him with a joke about distances to the moon and to a distant place named N. The lecturer admitted he had never visited N, prompting the clever retort: how many times had ta been to the moon.
A cautious note warns would be thieves as Mrs McQuillan left home to attend to tasks. The grocer was due and she pinned a front door note saying all out, dont leave anything. On return the note was altered with a hostile message claiming little was taken.
Wyoming editor BM Barlow recalls Bill Nye recounting a rail accident where a locomotive and two cars were destroyed, the press car smashed, but no fatalities. Nye joked that after decades of promises the old South bridge finally collapsed into the gorge with a passenger train.
