Stingy John tears down greed with a midnight vision of the devil. Milly returns as John pays off a widow’s mortgage, remodels the poorhouse, and allows her lover to prove himself, while Milly and her suitor reunite amid a joyous Heimat-like chorus.
Milly discovers her uncle’s anger toward her lover stems from his fear after he saw the devil. The twist: the suitor is the new Mephistopheles of the San Martino Opera, performing near them. He explains the dramatic night and their reconciliation, as Milly flatters his onstage realism.
