Maryland Increases Base Sales Tax To Fourteen Cents
Marylanders must begin paying a 14 cent base sales tax as of 12:50 PM Monday after Governor Lane signed the act at the last week's special legislative session. State Comptroller James J. Lacy said revenue losses are expected to about $1.5 million annually. Tax applies to multiple-item purchases totaling 14 cents or more. items under 13 cents are not taxed. Food bought for consumption outside the home becomes taxable. home meals are exempt. Sellers must determine where food is consumed, with the comptroller planning a rapid education program for stores and delicatessen owners.

Culver Elected Shore President
Culver of Seaford was named by the East ern Shore Baseball League board to succeed J. Thomas Kibler as league president at a Salisbury meeting. The Seaford businessman, a former pitcher, will attend the minor league meeting in Miami next month. DENTON S Sgt Shaffer Drowns While Fishing Near Camp Lee
Master Sergeant Donald C. Shaffer U S Army 29 of Denton drowned last Armistice Day when his fishing boat capsized near Dendron Virginia near Camp Lee. He was found six hours later still with his pipe. A military funeral will be held in Denton with a firing squad and pallbearers from Camp Lee. He served in World War II and later reenlisted. He is survived by his widow two daughters and his parents and three brothers.

WBOC Salisbury will start a county radio series honoring Del Marva Peninsula counties as part of a $130000 expansion. The station now runs 1000 watts on 960 kHz and will air FM service soon. Open House marks Education Week at Caroline High
Caroline High School celebrated American Education Week November 9 to 15 with an Open House on Wednesday November 12. About fifty parents visited classrooms as the day featured an all school assembly at 10 a m with band music, flag salute, Star Spangled Banner, Scripture reading, prayer, and remarks on education. Safe Contains $200 Stolen From Store
Thieves entered the American Store on Market Street and stole a large iron safe containing about $200. Joseph Harrington, the store manager, said the safe was taken through the front door. Maryland State Police investigator Gus Koste is on the case. This is the second store safe theft in the area in recent months, the prior one from Leander H. Thomas at Hobbs. The later safe was found behind a graveyard with the door blown off and papers scattered.
