Cost Of Transporting Mail By Ground Versus Air
A department cost study shows rail and surface carriers handled 17.5 billion non local first class pieces at about one ninth of a cent each. Airlines moved 1.33 billion air mail pieces at roughly 2.67 cents each, over 20 times rail rates. Railroads also rent facilities, bringing total revenue per piece to about a quarter of a cent, far less than air carriers’ pay for transport. On a ten mile basis, ground carriers earn about 16 cents per ton mile, while airlines average 1.33 dollars. most of that difference is considered a transportation subsidy to airlines. Overall, railroads are deemed most efficient for moving the bulk of mail.
