National attention focused on six key states California Minnesota New Mexico North Dakota Oregon and West Virginia as returns trickle in. Hughes leads in California Minnesota and North Dakota while Wilson holds Oregon New Hampshire and New Mexico with a tight race in West Virginia and ongoing doubts about final totals. Both parties claim victory or near victory as Wilkes and McCormick urge vigilance and confidence in their respective outcomes.
Delaware results show Hughes carrying the state by a small margin while Sen Henry A Dupont loses to Josiah O Wolcott in a Democratic win. Congressional races are tight with Miller likely ahead Polk, and Republicans gain most of state offices except attorney general. Democrats to control legislature. New Castle and Sussex go GOP. The Maryland Republican party appears to have chosen Joseph J. France as the victor in a Senate race. Final results show France securing a commanding support across party lines within the state, signaling a major rightward shift for Maryland’s congressional representation.
President Wilson carried Maryland by about 16 516 votes while Dr Joseph M France defeated David J Lewis for the US senate 607 in a contest marked by Democratic opposition in Baltimore and anti prohibition sentiment Prohibition was defeated in seven of eleven localities with Baltimore City voting strongly against it Annapolis Havre de Grace and Hagerstown also went dry and the state budget amendment passed by roughly 30 000 votes
St. Paul, Nov. 9. Wilson led Minnesota by a shrinking margin as rural districts reported Hughes outpacing the president. Early tallies show 58,763 to 50,711 in five hundred precincts, with a later city vote lifting Wilson to a 10,387 edge. The Pioneer Press claims Hughes carries Minnesota by about 25,000 and Kellogg the Senate by 50,000 to 75,000.
Chicago reports Oliver W. Stewart saying the dry movement gains Michigan, South Dakota, Nebraska and Montana to join nineteen dry states. Utah governor Bomberger’s victory hints at prohibition by statute. South Dakota woman suffrage win praised for aiding enforcement. Utah likely joins the dry list as well.
Rhode Island voters backed Republicans for statewide offices with Siines and Kennedy re elected by large margins while the party lost the U S Senate seat to Democrat Peter Gerry. Lippitt was defeated as the first direct Senate election feature. Incumbents in three House districts were reelected and Governor Beeckman won by about 13 000. Hughes carried the state by around 4700.
Returns from across Nevada on election night indicate President Wilson will win with roughly a 1500 vote margin. The senatorial race is undecided, with Pittman leading Platt. Republican E Roberts is re-elected to Congress.
Salt Lake City reports President Wilson carried Utah with an estimated 15,000 plurality. King, a Democrat, elected senator by about 10,000. Bamberger and the Democratic state ticket were also victorious.
In Sioux Falls SD on November 9 incomplete returns show Hughes leading over Wilson with Hughes at 41949 votes and Wilson at 37349. Result reflects early statewide counts in the race.
New York November 9 Democrats likely to hold Senate with reduced majority while Republicans gain House seats in key states. Reports show Democrats winning several Senate seats including Maine New York New Jersey Maryland and others, with Republicans picking up in Indiana West Virginia Arizona and Montana. Result remains uncertain as final tallies continue.
In New York Whittman Calder leads the Republican ticket for the United States Senate with a statewide vote of 683,333 to Me Combs 508,732. Calder carried New York City by 24,949 amid a strong GOP showing in the state. President and governor returns show Hughes ahead, while Wilson trailed Seabury, as Colorado reports Hughes 68,241 and Wilson 116,618 with Carlson 82,051 to Gunter 104,699 for governor.
