The narrator’s regiment endures distant cannonade as fog of war thickens. Firing subsides, they slog through rain soaked brambles into a swampy meadow, unsure of enemy position. Commands prove contradictory as officers and men bicker while trying to regroup and avoid a deadly trap.
In a brutal retreat through a swamp under bombardment, soldiers struggle to escape streams of water and advancing enemies. Bodies entangle, rifles vanish, and shells explode as fear and horror rise, until the survivors stagger into forest cover, forever marked by a great and unspeakable horror.
A WWI battlefield narrative halves reality and nightmare as a lone survivor witnesses mass slaughter, mangled bodies, and the human race collapsing. The shelling, regiments, and a terrifying final realization lead to the narrator's death by his own hand, sparing nothing but desolate silence.
The narrator laments graves covered with earth and lays out a stark scene of dead siblings in rows within a potato field. They reflect on death, envious glances at their sweet dying, and the sight of corpses stretching along the field as the sun continues to rise or fall, leaving the question unanswered.
