Contested Maryland Seat Backed by House Policy
Editorial notes from Washington discuss Representative Thomas A. Smith of Maryland likely to keep his seat, while William F. Jackson may be declared not elected under a House Elections Committee policy aimed at contested Southern districts. State tax cut tied to railroad stock sale proceeds
After this year the State tax drops from 23 to 16 cents per 100 dollars. The change follows the sale of the State's interest in the Washington Branch of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, completed this week. A Northrn Central annuity of 90000 dollars a year is planned next, expected to yield about 3200000 dollars, possibly 3000000. Combined with the B&O sale, cash proceeds could total 5500000 dollars, enough to erase the State debt.
