Delaware’s Shame and Prosperity in the State

Rev. Robert A. Edwards denounces Delaware’s representation in Congress as a moral failing, while Caroline County anticipates rising taxable wealth beyond five million and a six million milestone by the century’s start. The article notes federal appropriations rising to over 1.55 billion, Arbor Day plans, labor debates, and political developments in Maryland and Delaware communities.

People Should Own Coal to Avert Famine, Says Attorney

Attorney Henry Lloyd, spokesman for miners before the Anthracite Coal Commission, told a Legislative Committee that the coal monopoly is complete and only public ownership can prevent future shortages. He warned a fuel trust could control hard and soft coal from mine to retailer and urged using receiverships to operate roads for the public, citing Sherman Act seizures as possible remedies.

System links trains and stations by track telephony

A Paris correspondent describes a Spanish engineered system enabling constant telephone communication between moving trains and signal stations. A dynamo on the engine powers a shoe along a wire fixed beside the track, with each section end containing transmitters and receivers. If two trains share a section, alarm bells trigger on both, and wireless telegraphy may soon replace the line.
