Maryland's only single tax colony changes ownership
Maryland's lone single tax colony at Gilpin's Point near Denton on the Choptank river has reverted to private ownership. Herbert Mason Jr. of Newark, Delaware, purchased the 100 acre site, where tenants paid fixed rents and the board funded taxes and licenses. The colony's history ties to Colonel William Richardson and Revolutionary era exploits, with the land later passing through owners including Frank Boland before the transfer.
