An inventive American engineer Isham Randolph famed for the Chicago drainage canal built a dam on end in Niagara River above Horseshoe Falls to raise water level for Niagara Falls winter needs. A 200 ton concrete obelisk seven feet high and fifty feet long, with a central iron chain and wooden wedges, broke into regular blocks when released by three hydraulic jacks on November 9 1905.
