A father recalls his daughter becoming a Brownie Scout and the simple moments signaling growth from bed making to bouquet rituals for fallen soldiers. He reflects on how Girl Scouting quietly shapes homes and communities as the movement now counts over a million and a half girls, promising to love God and country and to help others.
On February 9 a bill known as the Civil Rights bill was introduced in the Maryland Legislature by Delegate Emory R. Cole of Baltimore City. It seeks equal rights in many public places and imposes penalties for violations. The bill was sent to the Judiciary Committee chaired by Delegate Lloyd L. Simpkins with a public hearing set for March 9 at 3 p.m. Simpkins says it is likely the first such bill in the General Assembly.
Caroline County swine producers are invited to a one day Swine meeting in Centreville at Ep worth Methodist Church on Friday March 11. The event runs from 10 a m to 3 p m with experts from the University of Maryland animal husbandry department discussing Swine Nutrition Swine Management Problems The Outlook on Certification and Breeding Efficiency in Swine Local producers and a veterinarian will also attend the program.
At the Caroline County Farm Bureau 4th District Discussion Group meeting in Preston the practice of nominating seven directors for Chop tank Electric Cooperative was questioned. The group nominated Perry Voshell, creating a real choice on the REA Director slate for the Denton annual meeting on March 7 at 1 p.m. The move aims to democratize handling of electric power issues and inspire broader participation.
The Eastern Shore District of The Maryland Federation of Women's Clubs will hold a Board of Directors meeting in Salisbury on March 10th in the Salisbury Room of the English Grill. Luncheon is $1.40 with reservations due by March 9th to Mrs Willis Carey Jr Allen Md. The afternoon program by the Junior Wicomico Woman's Club will feature reports on district accomplishments.
Senate Bill No. 169 in Caroline County shifts scholarship awards to the local university and college boards beginning 1955. The Board of Education in Denton should be consulted for available scholarships and exam dates. Applicants must contact the scholarship board of the school offering the exam and arrange to seek consideration.
The Ladies Auxiliary of Denton Volunteer Fire Co met in the fire hall on Thursday February 24 for their regular meeting. President Sylvia Holland presided. The Sick Committee reported one fireman and five auxiliary members remembered. Relieving duties included serving hot coffee and sandwiches at Fuchs barn fire. A tea for Girl Scouts and families is set for March 6 at 3 p.m. at the Club House.
Mrs. Herbert McAllister, chairwoman, reports the Denton polio drive total of 1729.97 from door to door solicitations and business places 1088.13 coin boxes 103.48 turkey donation 139.50 and three schools 396.86. She thanks solicitors and contributors and notes remaining time to donate.
All applications for 1955 56 license plates for passenger cars and motor cycles have now been mailed by the Department of Motor Vehicles according to Commissioner T B R Mudd. If you have not received your application notify the Department in writing with full name new and old address and title number if possible. Return promptly in the furnished envelope as the new plates must be displayed by midnight March 31. Fees shown with the notice should be remitted.
The eighth meeting of Caroline County Institute on Maryland Public Affairs was held at Preston High School with about thirty members. They study Governmental Services, covering Juvenile Courts Welfare Health and Pupil Personnel. Raymond Simmons and Frank Tarburton from the State Department of Vocational Rehabilitation spoke on work for the handicapped in Maryland and Caroline County. Tarburton can be reached at the Denton Health Center on alternate Thursdays or at Chestertown.
Conference Youth Council sponsors visits by fifteen teams of four including one adult two high school students and one college student to each Charge in March. Teams travel Easton Wilmington Salisbury Dover Districts with district directors named for each weekend to promote Methodist Youth Fellowship.
A meeting at the Denton Fire Hall on Friday March 4 at 8 o clock will cover methods to control spittlebugs alfalfa weevil pea aphids and other pests in hay crops. University of Maryland Extension Entomologist T L Russell will discuss effective insecticides and application timing. Damages from these pests range 30 to 80 percent and cows often refuse damaged hay.
The Caroline Home and Auto Supply in Denton, a Firestone dealer, has been named exclusive handler of the complete Dunlop Tire and Rubber Company line from Buffalo New York. Proprietors Aldridge Pepper and Paul W. Johnson emphasize that over 85 percent of foreign cars use Dunlop tires and invite readers to view a special introductory offer in this issue.
The 4-H Older Youth of Caroline County elected officers at a Denton meeting on Monday Feb 28 Stuart Coulbourne of Preston president Joan Engerman Preston vice president Lois Fuchs Denton secretary and Frances Fisher Hillsboro treasurer Jack Sanders Preston reported on the Baltimore Recreation and Leadership Training event Feb 10 Lois Fuchs shared a Chicago National 4-H Club Congress trip. The group later played games and served refreshments. On March 22 the 4-H Older Youth meet in Preston at the 20th Century Homemakers Club House for a Public Speaking Workshop by Dorothy Emerson State 4-H Staff and square dancing with Preston club serving refreshments.
John R. Ricards, a teller at the Denton National Bank since April 1934, resigned with the board’s reluctant acceptance due to impaired health. Previously he worked in Washington, D. C., but was best known locally as a railroad agent at Hobbs from 1908 to 1924. The notice wishes him enjoyment in retirement.
The Denton Brownie and Girl Scout troops mark the 43rd anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the USA during Girl Scout Week March 6 to 12 with activities. On March 6, Girl Scout Sunday, troops and leaders attend Grace Methodist Church at 11 a.m. in uniform, meet outside at 10:45. Sunday afternoon at 3, the Denton Community Club, sponsor of two troops, hosts a gathering.
Friday and Saturday mark the Denton Dollar Days event aligning with National 4-H Club Week and Girl Scout Week. The Salvation Army’s American settlement date is noted as March 10, 1880, signaling historical civic observances.
About 150 attendees at First Methodist Church for the Denton Pack 265 annual Blue And Gold Dinner. Special guests Wesley Thawley and Dr. John F. French. James Cooper awarded growth and program recognition. Cub Master Frank Gerhardt presented many advancement awards and pins to a long list of Cubs. Balloon contest and Living Circle ceremony closed the event with shared pride.
Young Fashions, a new store in Easton, will offer apparel for infants, children and teenagers. Located in the Elka Fox building on Dover Street, the shop is designed in keeping with the Colonial Architectural movement of Easton.
Chase City Virginia. Jack Smith president of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association will speak at the Choptank Electric Cooperative annual meeting in Denton Maryland on Monday March 7 at 1 pm at the Dentonia Theatre. He will discuss member responsibilities while highlighting the Rural Electric program and co op growth. The event includes Mel Price and band music door prizes a staff financial report and director elections with business matters.
A county wide polio vaccination plan was outlined after a Feb 25 meeting led by Dr. R H Riley. Officials from county and Baltimore City health departments plus state and city education and infant paralysis groups reviewed vaccinating about 150000 first and second graders with the Salk vaccine this spring if licensed.
